The word 'mudra' means 'seal' in Sanskrit. Yoga mudras help seal or affirm an intention or idea. Mudras have been practiced since the beginning of the Hindu and Buddhist traditions and have been used for a long time to treat various physical and mental health problems. Hand mudras, especially Gyan mudra and beached mudra, are often seen in statues of different Hindu deities. The five fingers are associated with the five elements, that is, the thumb is associated with Agni or fire, index finger with Vaayu or air, middle finger with Aakash or sky, ring finger with Prithvi or earth, and little finger with jala or water. Therefore, practicing hand gestures or yoga mudras regularly can help you reap various health benefits, and weight loss is one of them. In yogic philosophy, specific internal organs are assigned to each of the fingers and when one holds the fingers in a specific way, the corresponding internal organ is activated and its related problems are cured. Blood pressure can be normalized, heart health can be improved and even body fat can be reduced effectively by practicing hand mudras every day.

1. Surya Mudra for weight loss

Surya mudra is also known as Agni Vardhak mudra, as it increases the Agni element and at the same time decreases the Prithvi element in the body. Excess of earth element or Prithvi can lead to the accumulation of excess fat in the body and overweight problems. By practicing Surya mudra regularly, one can decrease the earth element in his body and increase the fire element to improve digestive power, and thus treat the problem of obesity naturally.

Steps to do:-

  • To perform Surya mudra, the practitioner needs to sit in vajrasana or in a diamond pose; sukhasana or easy posture; or in Padmasana or the lotus pose, according to your comfort.

  • Keep your eyes closed to concentrate better.

  • Keep your back straight

  • The practitioner must place the tip of his ring finger at the base of the thumb and then apply gentle pressure on the ring finger with the thumb.

  • When the ring finger is placed under the thumb, it reduces the earth element that corresponds to the fat and increases the element of fire that improves digestion.

  • Therefore, by doing this single mudra, the individual can enjoy double benefits, including weight loss.

  • Hold this mudra for about 45 minutes

2. Linga Mudra for weight loss

Linga is the Sanskrit term for phallus or the male genital organ. Linga mudra helps trigger weight loss by strengthening the Agni and pitta elements to increase body heat. 

Steps to do:-

  • Sit in a comfortable position, with cross-legged or lotus position

  • They need to keep their backs straight and hold their chest and head up. Both hands should rest on their respective knees with their palms up.

  • In this mudra, the performer needs to intertwine his two palms and keep his left thumb up and out to form the phallus. 

  • Practice it from 20-30 minutes per day


  • Since the thumb represents the fire element, practicing this mudra regularly helps increase the Agni in the body and thus improve the digestive power.

  • Proper digestion helps prevent the formation of toxins like Ama and promotes the burning of fat stored by the body that leads to weight loss.

3. Kapha-Nashak Mudra for weight loss

Kapha-nashak or Pitta-kaarak mudra is a combination of water and fire elements, that is, jal and agni. This yoga mudra helps decrease kapha mood and increases pitta humor simultaneously in the body to improve digestion and reduce body fat, resulting in weight loss. However, it is advisable that people with excess pitta in their body practice this mudra in moderation and only when necessary.

Steps to do:-

  • Sit in a comfortable position, with cross-legged or lotus position

  • Keep your eyes closed to concentrate better.

  • Keep your back straight

  • This mudra is done by placing the ring and fingers at the base of the thumb and then applying gentle pressure on these fingers.

  • Hold this pose for 30-45 minutes every day

 4. Vaayan mudra for weight loss

Vaayan mudra increases Vata humor in the body and is also known as Vata-Kaarak mudra. To perform vaayan mudra to lose weight,

Steps to do:-

  • Sit in a comfortable position, with cross-legged or lotus position

  • Keep your eyes closed to concentrate better.

  • Keep your back straight

  • To perform this mudra place the tips of his index and middle finger on the tip of the thumb and then apply gentle pressure.

  • Hold this position for 15-20 minutes

This mudra helps control the nervous system and many other body movements. Some other popular health benefits of Vaayan mudra are the resolution of problems such as frequent urination, loose movements, excessive menstrual bleeding, oily skin and hair problems. Vaayan mudra helps reduce excess body weight and also keeps the nervous system healthy. Vaayan mudra also helps to overcome lethargy, laziness, drowsiness, excessive sleep, sweating, and thirst.

5. Gyan Mudra for weight loss

Although not directly related to weight loss, Gyan mudra helps relieve mental stress, which is related to excessive intake and indirectly, Gyan mudra helps to lose weight. Therefore, by practicing this Gyan mudra regularly, one can relax the body and keep its weight in control as well. Gyan mudra not only helps you lose weight, but it also improves concentration levels and promotes a peaceful lifestyle. Gyan mudra is usually performed together with yoga or meditation asanas.

Steps to do:-

  • To perform Gyan mudra, the practitioner needs to sit in vajrasana or in a diamond pose; sukhasana or easy posture; or in Padmasana or the lotus pose, according to your comfort.

  • They need to keep their backs straight and hold their chest and head up. Both hands should rest on their respective knees with their palms up.

  • Then they should touch the tip of the thumb and index finger, while the remaining fingers remain straight and parallel to each other.

  • Gentle pressure on the thumb and index finger should be applied to generate energy that helps reduce stress and promote relaxation in the body that helps with weight loss.

  • The mantra "aum" can also be sung while inhaling and exhaling.
